Tuesday 06/03/2008 -- Why Must Conté Go?
Conté must go simply because his presidency has not worked out very well for the people of Guinea.
After 24 years of his presidency, today, our country is poorer than countries at war like Iraq,
Sudan, or even Ivory Coast. Countries that just came out of war like Liberia and Sierra Leone are doing better than us economically.
Mali, an almost totally desertique country with no access to the ocean is more economically advanced than us in Guinea. To make that
situation even worse, Mali uses our seaport in Conakry to import and export
goods. Honestly, that does not make sense to me.
Why do I blame the President? Because I believe that he is the only person in a position to actually make "the difference". Our country
is very small. To put in perspective, some of the smallest states in the U.S. are bigger than Guinea. Our entire population is about 10
million people. New York City alone has more people.
Please do not get me wrong, I do not think that the President is the only person who is responsible of the situation is Guinea today.
But he certainly is the only one who can fix it.
Conté created the situation with his extreme ignorance, and other people took advantage of it.
Today anyone who is in a position of power is there for only one thing: rob the country's riches for themselves. No one cares about the
rest of the people. No one realizes that being in a position of power makes them responsible of millions of people. No one realizes that it
is a privilege, and not a right. The people become your first priority if you work for the government. Even your family must come second.
The President must lead by example. Sure he can't do everything, but he is the commander in Chief. He represents the country, he
represents the people. He certainly isn't all powerful, but the people look to him for answers.
Conté is just not that president. He has not been that president for years and years. Things have gone from bad to worse in the last few
years.
I remember in 1989 USD 1.00 cost GNF 1 000. In 1999 USD 1.00 only cost GFN 1 400. Now in 2008, USD 1.00 cost USD 4 500. Do the math!
The majority of people don't have drinking water at home, which is clearly the most basic need of anyone.
What happened? What is going on? Since when has it been okay to bring the army out on the very people it is supposed to protect? Since
When has it been okay to kill the very people that you are supposed to be leading to a better life?
Conté must go away, with his family. Apparently, his son is now running the show since Conté himself is too old to even get out of his
seats. He doesn't even know what is going on in the country he is supposed to be running.
I can keep going on and on for ever about the shortscomings of the General but the reality is that the people of Guinea need to finally take
advantage of the riches and resources of their country. Those resources don't just belong to a small group of people who have the chance to
work in the government.
The people of Guinea has long suffered for nothing, and it's time for change. We need to know real freedom, prosperity, and security too.
And we need a president that can help us reach those goals, not a president that doesn't even know who we are and what we need.
Conté has got to leave now!
